Norway's oldest triathlon, around Sognsvann

Oslo Triatlon is the oldest triathlon in Norway, raced at Sognsvann in Oslo on Saturday 14 August 2027.

The race has invited people to swim, cycle and run in the Sognsvann area since 1983. Sportsklubben Rye has been part of it from the start, first responsible for the bike leg, and is now the sole organiser. The race is held on the second Saturday of August, and every athlete who finishes within the time limit gets a medal, food and drink, a T-shirt and a swim cap.

The Olympic distance is 1500 m of swimming in Sognsvann, 40 km on the bike through Maridalen in two laps via Sognsveien and Carl Kjelsens vei, and 10 km of running around Sognsvann in two laps. It is open to everyone from 18. The sprint is 750 m, 23 km and 5 km on the same ground, and is open from 16, which makes it a natural first triathlon. There is also a team relay and races for children.

Waves are mixed and set by self-seeding, in groups of roughly 100 to 150 athletes with 15 minutes between them, and the start list published about two weeks before the race decides which wave you are in. A licence from the Norwegian triathlon federation is required, as a full year or a one-day licence.

The run goes clockwise on forest roads around Sognsvann. On the Olympic distance the athletes run a loop around the arena between their two laps of the lake before coming back to the arena and the finish, and drink stations with sports drink and water stand at about 0.1, 3.0, 5.1 and 8.0 km.
