From the Prefectural Government Building to Osaka Castle

The Osaka Marathon is the city's big February road race, and the 2027 edition is the 15th.

The 15th Osaka Marathon is on Sunday 28 February 2027. Wave 1 of the marathon starts at 9:15 in front of the Osaka Prefectural Government Building, waves 2 and 3 follow in sequence, and the race finishes inside Osaka Castle Park. The course is certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, World Athletics and AIMS, and the race also serves as a men's selection race for the Japanese team at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

There are two distances. The marathon is 42.195 km with a time limit of 7 hours, so the course closes at 4:15 PM. The 720 Naniwa Marathon is a 7.2 km run that starts with the third wave at 9:45 and finishes in front of Nakanoshima Children's Book Forest, with a time limit of 1 hour and 20 minutes. A separate 720 m course is held for wheelchair users.

The field is capped at 34,000 people, with 31,970 places in the marathon and 2,000 in the 720 Naniwa Marathon. General places are drawn by lottery, and marathon entrants must be born on or before 1 April 2008. It suits anyone who wants a large city marathon on closed roads, from first timers to people chasing a time.

Spectators gather near the start by the government building and around the finish at Osaka Castle. Roads around the course are closed on race day, so public transport is the easiest way to move between viewing points. The race has partner marathons in Chicago and Prague.
