A marathon from the D-Day beaches to Caen

The Marathon de la Liberté is a Normandy running festival created in 1988 that pays tribute to D-Day, with courses past the landing beaches finishing in Caen.

The 40th edition runs from 10 to 13 June 2027, with the main races on Sunday 13 June. The festival has six events in all, including a marathon relay, La Rochambelle, a run and walk in support of the fight against cancer, and Les Foulées de la Liberté for schoolchildren in Caen.

The marathon starts at 9:10 from Courseulles-sur-Mer and finishes in central Caen, with 110 m of climbing and a 5 hour 30 time limit. It passes Juno and Sword beaches, the Ouistreham casino and Pegasus Bridge, through 17 historic towns. The Pegasus half marathon (21.1 km, 104 m) starts at 8:55 from Pegasus Bridge in Bénouville, the first bridge liberated by British soldiers of the 6th Airborne in 1944, with a 2 hour 45 limit. The 10 km starts at 8:30 in Caen on a fully urban course with a new route for 2027.

All three races carry the FFA bronze label and are qualifiers for the French championships. The 10 km suits beginners and seasoned racers alike, and close to 60 percent of its field are women. The marathon and the half have pacers and free shuttles, and all three end with a Normandy food buffet. Entries open on 4 November 2026 for the marathon, 6 November for the half and 9 November for the 10 km.

The organisers count more than 30,000 participants, 60,000 spectators and 26 fan zones along the routes, and suggest itineraries for supporters. The finish site in Caen moves to a new location in 2027, with details still to come.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the organiser.
