Open water racing on Lough Cutra in County Galway

The Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon and Multisport Festival is held on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 May 2027 on the Lough Cutra estate in County Galway.

Lough Cutra Castle was built in the Gothic revival period and overlooks the estate's 1,000 acre lake, which the organiser describes as the largest privately owned lake in Europe and which hosts the event's open water swims. The Castle Race Series opens its 2027 season here with a weekend of triathlon, duathlon, aquabike, aquathlon, swimming and running.

Sunday's triathlons are the Gauntlet, a 1.9K swim, 90K bike and 21K run, and the Olympic at 1.5K, 40K and 10.5K. Saturday has the Sprint Plus (800M, 40K, 8K), the Sprint (750M, 20K, 5K), the Super Sprint (400M, 20K, 4K), the Starter (200M, 12K, 2.5K) and a 16 to 17 years race over the sprint distance, with junior races down to 9 year olds.

Duathletes choose the Middle (11K, 96K, 10K) or Standard (11K, 40K, 5K) on Sunday, or the Sprint (5K, 20K, 2.5K) on Saturday. There are standard and sprint aquabikes and aquathlons, a Sunday marathon, half marathon and 10K, and Saturday swims of 5K, 2.5K and 1 mile on the lake.

The 12 to 13 and 14 to 15 years triathlons ride a tarmac bike course on closed roads, while the 9 to 10 and 11 to 12 years races are off road, where a mountain bike is advisable. Across the weekend, athletes and spectators share a festival village with live music, shopping, food and drink, children's entertainment and yoga, and finishers can add their name and race time to their medal.

On Livebib you can follow an athlete live when they choose to share their own position from the phone they carry. That position comes from the participant, not from the organiser's timing, and official results are published by the Castle Race Series.
