Sakurajima across the bay for 42 km

The Kagoshima Marathon runs along Kinko Bay with Sakurajima in view, through the historic heart of Kagoshima.

Kagoshima Marathon 2027 is on Sunday 7 March 2027 and goes ahead in rain. This edition marks the countdown to the 200th anniversary of the birth and the 150th anniversary of the death of Saigo Takamori. The marathon starts at 8:30, the fun run follows once the marathon field has left, and the marathon closes at 15:30.

The marathon starts in front of the former Dolphin Port site, turns at Shigetomi in Aira City and finishes in front of Kagoshima City Hall. The organiser calls it a flat course certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, with views of Sakurajima across Kinko Bay on the waterfront, streets past the Saigo Takamori statue and Sengan-en, and the Tenmonkan shopping district.

There are 10,000 places and a 7 hour limit, and entrants must be born on or before 1 April 2008 and able to finish within 6 hours 40 minutes. The 8.9 km fun run has 3,000 places for people from junior high school age, takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, and finishes in front of Yamakataya.

Entries for 2027 have closed. Runners who also enter the 44th Ibusuki Nanohana Marathon are part of a joint prize draw between the two races. Spectators can watch the start at the waterfront and the finish by City Hall, both in central Kagoshima.
