Out of a 1,300-year-old spa town, into the beech forest

Every course here ends in the same place: Yamanaka-za, in the hot-spring town of Yamanaka Onsen, which the organiser notes has a history of some 1,300 years.

Kaga Spa Trail Endurance 100 by UTMB is a UTMB World Series event in Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It was first held in June 2025, and its second edition, from 18 to 21 June 2026, drew runners from 55 countries according to the organiser. Three races finish at Yamanaka-za. The KAGASPA 100K starts on the evening of Saturday 20 June at 18:30 from Yukemuri Kenkou Village in Yamanaka Onsen: 97.4 km, 5,122 m of climbing, 27 hours. The KAGASPA 50K starts from the same place at 05:00 on Sunday 21 June: 56.8 km, 2,607 m, 14 hours. The KAGASPA 20K starts at 08:00 on Saturday 20 June from Kenmin no Mori: 20.7 km and six hours.

The mountains around the town are the Kanan Sanzan, the three peaks of Mt. Fuji Shagatake, Mt. Dainichi and Mt. Kurakake, and the organiser describes the course as steep climbs through fresh green primeval beech forest and mountain trails along streams. Matsuo Bashō stopped here on his Oku no Hosomichi journey and wrote about the hot spring. The organiser also publishes its own bear safety management for the race.

A 100K that starts at dusk means a whole night in the forest, and that is what a Livebib link is for. The runner shares their own broadcast, and family open it in a browser with no account and no app. They see the position on the course line, the distance covered and a finish estimate for Yamanaka-za that updates as the race goes. Anything estimated is marked as estimated, and when the phone loses signal in a valley the position is carried forward along the course instead of freezing. The runner decides who gets the link.
