KAGASPA 100K

With 5,122 metres of climbing and 5,130 metres of descent, the course begins and ends in Yamanaka Onsen and spends almost all of the distance in the mountains around it. The organiser’s aid-station table lists ten stops: Mt. Kariyasu at km 8.7, Ouchi at 16.7, Kutani Dam at 27.1, Kutani Shinsui Park at 38.3, Manago at 44.8, Sugino-kawa at 60.2, Kenmin no Mori at 63.1, Imadate Aios Square at 69.8, Takigahara at 81.7 and Tonoo at 90.2, before the finish at Yamanaka-za. The single mid-race drop bag is collected at Kenmin no Mori.

The evening start is the defining feature. The first kilometres up to Mt. Kariyasu are run in the last light, and the long middle of the course, through beech forest and along mountain streams, belongs to the night. The 27-hour limit runs to 21:30 on Sunday, and the organiser expects the first finisher after about 11 hours 30 minutes. The top three men and women earn a place in CCC at the UTMB Final.
