Across the border from Strömstad to Halden

Grenserittet is a mountain bike ride that starts in Strömstad in Sweden, crosses the border into Norway and finishes at Fredriksten fortress in Halden.

The 2027 edition is on Saturday 21 August. Grenserittet was first held in 1998 and is owned by Halden Skiklubb, run on a non-profit basis with around 570 volunteers from 20 clubs on both sides of the border.

The 80 km route starts close to sea level in Strömstad and ends at the 300 year old Fredriksten fortress, with about 1,040 m of climbing and a high point of about 225 m. It is roughly 18 km of asphalt, 45.5 km of gravel and forest roads and 16.8 km of trail and tractor track. The organiser calls it technically easy but demanding on changes of pace for anyone chasing a result. Food stations stand at Buar, Prestebakke and Kula, with cola at Kiwitoppen.

Grenserittet Midt covers 36 km from Prestebakke school to the same finish, with about 358 m of climbing and a good mix of gravel and terrain. It suits riders who find 80 km a bit much, families, and young riders aged 13 to 16, who ride it as Grenserittet Ung. Gravel bikes with drop bars now have their own classes, and e-bikes are allowed in the trim classes, which are timed but not ranked.

The 80 km is open to anyone who turns 17 during the year. Cut-offs are 15:30 at Prestebakke and 16:45 at Kula. Both routes finish at the fortress in Halden.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from Grenserittet.
