From Lorne to Apollo Bay along the coast
The Great Ocean Road Running Festival closes one of Australia's best known coastal roads for a weekend of races between Lorne and Apollo Bay.
The 2027 festival is on 15 and 16 May. On Sunday the 60 km ultra and the 44 km marathon both start at 8:00 from Lorne Surf Life Saving Club and follow the Great Ocean Road west to the Apollo Bay Hotel. The 23 km half marathon starts at 8:00 from Kennett River and finishes in Apollo Bay. In Lorne there is also a 10 km at 8:45 and a 12 km trail run at 9:30.
Saturday brings the shorter events in Apollo Bay: the 6 km at 11:30 and the 14 km Paradise Run at 13:00. Across the weekend the festival offers nine distances, so people of very different experience can take part.
The coastal road is not flat. It winds and rolls between headlands with the ocean on one side and forest on the other, and the ultra and marathon share a cut-off of 6 hours and 30 minutes. Plan pacing for the hills rather than for a fast road time.
Spectators can watch the starts in Lorne and Kennett River and the finish in Apollo Bay. With the road closed, getting between towns on race day takes planning, so check the transport options beforehand. The festival is run by MARI.
