Steep mountain trails around Bright and Mount Buffalo

The Buffalo Stampede is a weekend of steep trail races based at Pioneer Park in Bright, in Victoria's Alpine region.

The 2027 Buffalo Stampede runs from Friday 19 to Sunday 21 March. It opens with the Twilight 10 km at 18:00 on Friday, which climbs 540 m. On Saturday the 100 km ultra starts at 6:00 and the 20 km SkyRun at 7:30, and on Sunday the SkyMarathon of 42 km starts at 7:20 from the Mount Buffalo Chalet.

The 100 km is the hardest test. It climbs and descends 4,800 m, reaches the Horn at 1,723 m on Mount Buffalo and has a cut-off of 28 hours. The SkyMarathon climbs 1,600 m and descends 2,650 m on its way back down to Bright, and the SkyRun climbs 1,400 m in 20 km.

For people who want more than one race, the Grand Slam combines events into 72 km and the Ultra Slam into 152 km over the weekend. More than 3,500 trail runners take part across the event, which is organised by SingleTrack Events.

The terrain is steep and technical in places, so poles, good shoes and a realistic plan for the climbs matter more than speed. Spectators can watch the starts and finishes at Pioneer Park in Bright, and the town itself makes an easy base for the weekend.
