Llyn Padarn, Pen y Pass and a run up Yr Wyddfa

The Brutal Extreme Triathlon and the Seriously Brutal Duathlon start together at 07:00 on Saturday 18 September 2027 in Llanberis, North Wales.

Brutal Events says its race was voted the world's toughest triathlon by 220 Triathlon in 2017, yet it is known for a low-key and friendly feel. Every distance swims in Llyn Padarn, rides laps of a hilly course over Pen y Pass and finishes with a run up and down Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on the Llanberis Path. Athletes can enter solo or as a team of 2 to 4.

The Bach is a standard distance with a twist: a 0.6 mile swim, a 29.9 mile bike and the mountain. The Canol is a 1.2 mile swim, 56 miles on the bike and one lake lap of about 5 miles before Yr Wyddfa. The Mawr is a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles and three lake laps, about 15 miles, before the mountain. A Double, the Cawr, is offered for experienced ultra athletes with a support crew. The Seriously Brutal Duathlon runs alongside in Bach, Canol and Mawr versions, starting with a run instead of the swim.

The swim course in Llyn Padarn is 1.25k a lap, and you leave the water every second lap. The organiser expects water of 16 to 18 degrees. The bike lap is about 28 miles on open roads, with a steep, sharp hill early on and the climb over Pen y Pass before a fast descent to HQ. The lake lap surprises first timers with hills, trails, rocks and a waterfall, and the mountain section is about 9 miles up and down, after a quick medic check.

Overall cut-offs are 8 hours for the Bach, 12 hours for the Canol and 21 hours for the Mawr. Registration with a mountain kit check runs from 16:00 to 20:00 on Friday in the main marquee, and transition opens at 05:00 on race morning. Hi-viz must be worn on the bike at all times. The swim in Llyn Padarn is a short walk from race HQ, which makes the lake the easiest place to watch the start.
