Ten laps along the Svartån

A city ultra built on a single loop: one 16.1-kilometre lap from Orientalen in Västerås, run once or ten times depending on the distance.

Black River Run is held on 19-20 September 2026 from Orientalen, the Västerås SOK club hut at Önstavägen 1, which is start, lap point and finish, with changing rooms, showers and a sauna. The distances are 10 miles (one lap), 20 miles (two), the 48-kilometre Instegsultra (three), 50 miles (five) and 100 miles (ten). The three shorter distances start at 09:30, the 50 and 100 miles at 10:00. The time limit is 30 hours for everyone, and no new lap may be started after 13:30 on the Sunday.

The lap is 10 miles and changes surface all the way round. The first five kilometres are narrow trails with stones and roots, including the hardest kilometre of the course over bare rock. After the first checkpoint at 5.9 km and a road crossing, the course follows the Svartån river downstream toward town, the organisers call it the fast section, gently downhill, past allotment gardens and under the E18 at Vallbybron. It then turns north along the river, and the lap saves its hills for the end: a steep climb of about 30 metres up under the E18 bridge, and a few more rises before Orientalen.

The organisers publish lap times live, but between two passes of the lap point a runner is sixteen kilometres away in a dark forest or out along the river. With Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast, and family and friends open it in a browser, with no account and no app. They see the position on the lap, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. If the phone loses signal, the dot does not freeze: the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated. The runner decides who gets the link.
