Michigan's spring gravel race through Barry County

Barry-Roubaix is a gravel race from Hastings, Michigan, named after the classic it imitates, with four distances on the rolling back roads of Barry County.

The 2027 race is on Saturday 17 April in Hastings, with the start and finish at Church and Center Street. The race usually takes place on the third Saturday in April, and the organiser describes it as a way to start the season with more than 5,700 fellow cyclists.

There are four race lengths. The Chiller is 18 miles with about 1,200 ft of climbing, the Thriller 36 miles with about 2,200 ft, the Killer 62 miles with about 4,000 ft, and the Psycho Killer 100 miles with over 7,000 ft. About 80 percent of the riding is on rolling gravel roads, with pavement, one mile of rough two track, and possibly rocks, sand, mud, snow and ice.

The 18, 36 and 62 mile courses are permanently marked with directional signs from the start in Hastings. The 100 mile course is not marked, so riders navigate with GPS files, cue sheets and maps. Youth riders aged 18 and under race the 18 and 36 mile distances for free, and no licence is required, so the shorter races suit first timers and families, while the Psycho Killer is built to be extremely difficult.

Spectators can gather at the start and finish in downtown Hastings, where the race begins in waves and the day ends with an after party and awards. Barry-Roubaix is part of the Michigan Gravel Race Series.
