Stone bridges and high ridges in Zagori

Zagori Mountain Running is a July trail weekend in the stone villages of Zagori in Epirus, north west Greece, based in Tsepelovo.

The 2027 edition is from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 July, and the organiser says the race turns 16 this year with new routes. It began in 2011, and by 2017 more than 2,000 people from 40 countries took part. All the main races start at Tsepelovo High School, and those who run TeRA and the Classic on both days take on the 93 km Challenge.

TeRA covers 60 km with nearly 4,000 m of climbing and starts on Saturday 17 July at 5:00, with a 15 hour limit and a cut-off at Moni Stomiou after 4 hours 45 minutes. It climbs to Tsouka Rosa at 2,320 m for sunrise over the Aoos gorge, then passes Drakolimni, the Astraka refuge, the Beloi viewpoint and Vradeto on the way back to Tsepelovo.

The Classic, 33 km with 2,100 m, starts on Sunday at 6:30 with a 9 hour limit and links seven villages on stone steps and old bridges, with a view into the Vikos Gorge. The half marathon of 21 km starts on Saturday at 7:30 with no cut-off and crosses the Kokkoros bridge. The Forest 10 km on Sunday at 8:45 has 430 m of climbing, a good choice for people new to mountain trails.

There is also a 5 km fun run on Saturday at 21:00 and a 1 km race for children. Spectators gather in Tsepelovo, where every course ends.
