25 km through the Enipeas gorge in December

The Winter Enipeas is the December mountain race of the Olympus Marathon organisation, a 25 km loop from Litochoro into the forests and gorge below Mount Olympus.

The 20th Winter Enipeas starts on Sunday 13 December 2026 at 09:00 from the small amphitheatre in Litochoro Municipal Park, the same park where the summer Olympus Marathon finishes. It is organised by the Olympus Marathon team together with the Municipality of Dion-Olympos, the Regional Unit of Pieria and the Region of Central Macedonia.

The course is 25 km with 1,740 m of climbing and a time limit of five and a half hours. It leaves the village over the iron bridge on the Enipeas, climbs through dense forest beside the Galntrimas stream to the Stavros refuge at 930 m, then descends past Zilnia and the Koubari area before a steep climb along the river to Mylos at km 12, the main station and the only cut-off. From there the E4 path enters the Enipeas gorge, then the route leaves it to climb the Gkolna slope through oak forest to the highest point, with a view over the gorge and the Agios Dionysios monastery, before dropping back into Litochoro.

The race is for adults who have already finished a mountain race of at least 11 km with 450 m of climbing. Trekking poles are not allowed and there are no cups at the stations, so participants carry at least half a litre of water. A beanie, a windproof jacket and gloves are recommended, because a December morning in the gorge can be cold.

The same morning, at 09:15, the 10th Olympia Monopatia offers 11 km with 540 m of climbing from the same park, open from the age of 15. For spectators, Litochoro is the place to watch, with the start and finish in the park and the last 1,100 m running through the village.
