On the tracks of the bear in Metsovo

Ursa Trail is a May mountain trail weekend in Metsovo, in the Pindus of northern Greece, run under the motto On the Tracks of the Bear.

The 2027 weekend runs from Friday 28 to Sunday 30 May, and registration opens on 21 March 2027. The races start from Metsovo, whose central square stands at about 1,150 m. The organiser's own pages describe the brown bear, which lives in the mountains of the northern and central Pindus.

The 40 km starts on Saturday 29 May at 8:00 from the central square and finishes there. It is mostly trail, with stretches of dirt road, cobbled kalderimi paths and a little asphalt, and it reaches its highest point of 1,887 m at 12.2 km. On the way it passes the town hall, the church of Agia Paraskevi, the Tsanakas museum and an old monastery on the road towards Thessaly. The course records are 3:43:54 for men and 4:23:14 for women.

On Friday at 17:00 the Katara Vertical climbs 4.6 km from near the Metsovitikos river to the top of Katara at 1,820 m, through meadows and then conifer forest, and the organiser brings people back down to town. On Sunday morning come the 21 km, which passes the Katogi Averoff winery at the first kilometre, and the 11 km with 664 m of climbing, a good start for people new to mountain trails.

Spectators can wait on the central square of Metsovo, where the long races start and finish. The organiser also lists a 100 km ultra, but its 2027 date is not out yet.
