Sail from Barmouth, run three summits, finish at Corpach

The Three Peaks Yacht Race starts in Barmouth on 12 June 2027 and finishes at Corpach near Fort William, after teams sail up the west coast and run to the highest peaks of Wales, England and Scotland.

The race has been run since 1977, and 2027 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Barmouth to Fort William race. The idea came from Barmouth sailor and climber Bill Tilman's adventures, and the first seven teams took just over 5 days. Nearwater Events is running the anniversary edition with the support of Merioneth Yacht Club.

The first leg sails about 62 sea miles past Bardsey Island and over Caernarfon Bar to Caernarfon Pier, where two runners head to the summit of Snowdon by the Ranger Path and back by Llanberis, 24.5 miles. From Caernarfon crews either sail round Anglesey or through the Menai Strait, about 100 sea miles to Whitehaven. There runners cycle 40 miles to and from Black Sail Youth Hostel and cross Black Sail Pass to Wasdale Head and Scafell Pike. The last leg is about 227 sea miles round the Mull of Kintyre and through the Sound of Jura to Corpach, where the runners climb Ben Nevis, a 17.8 mile round trip.

In total that is about 389 sea miles of sailing plus 54.8 miles of running, 40 miles of cycling and 16,500 feet of climbing, over 3 or 4 days. Each yacht has five crew, any two of whom must reach each summit together. Yachts must be 26 to 50 foot long, engines are not allowed except for safety in specific port areas, and rowing is allowed.

The race suits sailors and fell runners who can work as one team. Many runs happen in the dark, and the organiser notes there is always snow on Ben Nevis, even in June. The start is in Barmouth, and the race finishes when the runners return to Corpach at the entrance to the Caledonian Canal.

On Livebib you can follow a crew member live when they choose to share their own position from the phone they carry. At sea the phone may be out of coverage for long stretches. That position is not the race's own tracking or timing, and official results come from the organiser.
