Tasman Sea to Pacific Ocean in one day

The original expedition multisport race crosses an island: bike, run over the Southern Alps, paddle a gorge, finish on a beach.

Coast to Coast has been run since 1983 and still defines what multisport means. The course goes 243 kilometres from Kumara Beach on the West Coast to Sumner Beach at Christchurch: 140 kilometres on the bike, a 33-kilometre mountain run over the boulder-strewn Goat Pass at 1,070 metres in the Southern Alps, and 67 kilometres of grade-two whitewater down the Waimakariri gorge. The Longest Day does the whole thing in one; the two-day race splits it across a weekend; the Mountain Run is the middle leg on its own.

Three disciplines, one island and a support crew driving between them — which makes knowing where the athlete actually is the whole problem of race day. Livebib puts every leg on one map with the athlete moving along it, the transitions marked, and an arrival estimate for the next one that updates all day. One link for the crew and everyone watching from home.
