The Great World Race Antarctica Marathon, Wolf's Fang

The Great World Race Antarctica Marathon, Wolf's Fang

The week opens at Wolf's Fang in Antarctica, reached by private jet from Cape Town. The runway lies at 71 degrees south on the Antarctic mainland, directly south of Cape Town, and the course is a groomed, non technical 10.55 km loop in its vicinity. For most runners it is their first step onto the frozen continent. The Antarctic weather decides the flying, so the organiser may hold the start until it is safe, and once this first marathon begins the clock of seven days, or 168 hours, starts.

Every marathon of The Great World Race is a race of its own with a time limit of 8 hours, which the race director may change on location. The organiser says each course is measured by AIMS or World Athletics measurers and sanctioned by the national federation, with aid stations, medical support and official timing as at any stand alone marathon. A half marathon option exists for runners who prefer the shorter distance.

This page covers the Antarctica marathon of The Great World Race 2027. On Livebib, family and friends at home can follow a runner's position on the course, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes on. If the phone loses its signal, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated.
