The Coastal Challenge, 13 to 20 February 2027 in Costa Rica: 249 km Expedition or 135 km Adventure stage race from Quepos to Drake Bay.

Quepos to Drake Bay, Pacific coast of Costa Rica · February 13, 2027

Six days along Costa Rica's Pacific coast

The Coastal Challenge is a six day stage race through the rainforest, rivers and beaches of the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

The race has been running since 2005, and the 23rd edition is held from 13 to 20 February 2027. Race week begins with registration and a mandatory briefing at the host hotel in San José on 13 February, and ends with the trip back on 20 February.

There are two categories. The Expedition covers 249 km in six stages and is meant for experienced stage racers. The Adventure covers 135 km through the same jungle, beaches and camps to the same finish, in shorter daily doses.

The 2027 Expedition starts in Quepos on Sunday 14 February with a first camp at Rafiki Safari Lodge. Stage two goes to Playa Dominical, and the third is called the Queen Stage, with the Nauyaca Waterfalls and the reefs of Marino Ballena. Stage four runs from Coronado to a riverside camp at Sierpe, stage five takes a mangrove ferry before camping at Playa Ganadito, and the finisher's day on Friday 19 February ends at Drake Bay, on the edge of Corcovado National Park.

The organiser describes the days as a duel with the tropics, with heat, humidity, river crossings and relentless climbs, and the nights as a travelling base camp where world class pros and first time stage racers share the same meals and tents. It calls the Adventure demanding but never impossible for any committed trail runner.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from The Coastal Challenge.
