Gran Maratón Costa Rica, live.

A San José marathon that gives back to La Sabana

The Gran Maratón Costa Rica fills the streets of San José on Sunday 22 November 2026, with every distance starting and finishing in Parque La Sabana.

The Gran Maratón Costa Rica is a city race with a cause. Taking part supports the restoration of Parque La Sabana, the big park on the west side of San José, and in particular a new athletics circuit there that everyone will be able to use. The 2026 edition is on Sunday 22 November.

There are five distances: a marathon of 42K, a 22K, a 10K, a 5K and a 2K. All of them start and finish in the heart of La Sabana. The marathon leaves the Estadio Nacional along the internal road by the stables, follows Avenida Las Américas to Pavas and joins the Circunvalación ring road, which it follows on the inside lanes. It then comes back through Pavas and along Paseo Colón and Avenida 2 to a turn in San Pedro, a stretch it covers twice before the finish back at the Estadio Nacional.

The 22K follows the Circunvalación ring around the city, so it gives a real tour of San José on closed roads. The 10K runs east along the city streets to a turn at San Pedro and back. The finish area is on the plaza in front of the Hotel Hilton, with the prize giving, spectators and special activities, so it is the natural place for families and friends to wait. The start from the Estadio Nacional also has music and a crowd.

One rule surprises visitors. The full road closures depend on a dress code, and every participant must run in white, either in the official event shirt or in any other white top. International entries are available through a special quota arranged with the Costa Rican tourism board.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, so the dot on the map is only as good as that phone and its signal. The official results come from the organiser of the Gran Maratón Costa Rica.
