80 km across Arctic Finnmark to the Varangerfjord

Tana-Varangerrennet is an 80 km classic ski race from Seida in Tana to Vadsø in eastern Finnmark on Saturday 10 April 2027.

The race follows a ski track with a long local story. The track between Tana and Vadsø was first used in 1996, and the ski club that runs it, Tana/Varanger løypas skilag, was formally founded in February 1997 as a joint project between the municipalities of Tana, Nesseby and Vadsø and local clubs. Up to and including 2022, 94,500 users had skied all or part of the track, and 1,820 of them had covered the whole distance of nearly 80 km from Seida to Vadsø in one day. A bridge over Nedre Flintelv, built in 2015, made it possible to groom the full length by machine.

The first competitive race was held in 2018, and in 2024 Tana-Varangerrennet joined the Ski Classics Challengers, with 11 women and 23 men on the start line, a participation record at the time. From 2026 it is also a seeding race for Birkebeinerrennet.

The start and race office are at Seida, just outside Tana bru, and the finish is at Vadsø ski stadium. The race is skied in classic technique along the Varangerfjord, through open plains and demanding terrain in Arctic nature, and conditions can swing from a biting wind to sunny stretches in the same day. There is a competition class, the Kievra Challenge and a trim class, so you do not need to be a racer to take part.

Supporters wait at Vadsø ski stadium, where a simple café with hot food is open in the clubhouse at the finish. The organiser provides bus transport between Vadsø and the start at Tana bru as part of the entry, so check the latest practical information before race day.
