Over the bridge first, the harbour last

Australia’s Abbott World Marathon Major starts on the north shore, crosses Sydney Harbour Bridge early and finishes on the water at the Sydney Opera House.

The TCS Sydney Marathon starts on Miller Street in North Sydney, near St Leonards Park, with the elite wheelchair race away at 6:15am and the mass start at 6:30am. The 2026 edition was run on Sunday 30 August with more than 40,000 runners from over 140 countries; the organiser has set the 2027 race for Sunday 29 August. The start line nods to the Sydney 2000 Olympic marathon, and the race carries a World Athletics Platinum label.

The course crosses the Harbour Bridge into the city, passes Barangaroo around 10 km and The Rocks just before 12 km, then heads up Macquarie Street and out along Oxford Street to Taylor Square. A loop of Centennial Park follows — the organiser calls the 33 km mark there “The Wall” — before the route comes back through Moore Park, past Taylor Square and Macquarie Street a second time, to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair at 39.2 km and the finish at the Opera House. The organiser publishes +313 m of climbing and a net drop of 83 m, with a 7-hour cut-off.

Several spectator points see the runners twice — Macquarie Street at 14 and 40.8 km, Taylor Square at 15.4 and 36.2 km — so families plan their morning around timing. Where the city’s towers or the bridge disturb the phone’s signal, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated, never shown as measured.
