SwimRun Cape Cod Medium Course

Shuttle buses take racers from Wellfleet Elementary School to the start in Truro. The Medium opens differently from the other two courses: the first half mile is sand, with about a mile along the Atlantic Ocean before the course turns inland to the ponds. The organiser gives it as 10.1 miles of running in six legs and 2,900 yards of swimming in five ponds, about 11.75 miles in all.

The swims are Truro Great Pond (400 yds), Horseleech (600), Higgins (300), Gull (800) and Long Pond (800), and the run legs are 0.6, 4.6, 0.7, 0.1, 1.4 and 2.7 miles. The Medium shares the Long’s cutoffs at the pond entrances: Horseleech by 10:30 am, Gull by 11:15 am and Long Pond by noon, and nobody may be on the course after 1:30 pm. A safety buoy, inflated, is mandatory on every swim, and the race-issued silicone cap goes on in every pond.

The Medium starts an hour after the Long and meets the same ponds, so friends waiting at Gull or Long Pond can see both fields. On Livebib the racer shares a link to their own broadcast. Family open it in a browser and see position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. When the phone loses its fix in the water, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated, not frozen.
