Hopkinton to Boylston Street on Patriots’ Day
The world’s oldest annual marathon, run point-to-point through Massachusetts towns to the iconic finish line on Boylston Street.
The Boston Marathon is the pinnacle of road racing, held continuously since 1897 on Patriots’ Day in April. Its storied point-to-point course begins in the rural town of Hopkinton and travels east through Ashland, Framingham, Natick, and Wellesley — home to the legendary wall of sound at the Wellesley Scream Tunnel.
The race’s defining test begins after 25 kilometres with the four Newton Hills, culminating in the infamous Heartbreak Hill at mile 20. Named in 1936 when Ellison Brown answered Johnny Kelley’s passing tap on the shoulder with a devastating surge, the hill has broken countless contenders before the course sweeps into Boston, turning right onto Hereford and left onto Boylston Street.
Livebib gives friends, family, and cheering squads one dedicated live view: the runner’s real-time position along the net-downhill course, splits through the Newton Hills, and minute-by-minute arrival estimates at the finish line in Copley Square.
