Seventy-five checkpoints, each with its own closing hour

A point-to-point road and mountain race from the foot of the Acropolis to Sparta, with a clock that runs against every runner at every checkpoint.

The 44th Spartathlon started at 07:00 on Saturday 26 September 2026 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus below the Acropolis, and finishes at the statue of King Leonidas in Sparta, 244.74 km away according to the organiser’s road book. The finish closes at 19:00 on Sunday, thirty-six hours after the start. The race follows the route the International Spartathlon Association traces to Pheidippides, sent from Athens to Sparta for help before the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Entry requires a qualifying performance and the association’s acceptance.

The road book lists seventy-five checkpoints after the start, roughly one every 3.5 km, and every one has a closing hour. The marathon mark at Megara, 42.2 km, closes at 11:45. The canal of Corinth at 77.6 km at 16:10. Ancient Nemea at 122.7 km at 23:00. Then the race leaves the road: the base of the mountain at 159.4 km closes at 05:10, the mountain top at 161 km at 05:50, and the route drops through Sagkas to Nestani and on through Tegea towards Sparta. Mount Parthenio is a 1,200-metre ascent and descent that the field reaches in the dark, on rough tracks and steep hillside.

For the people at home, a day and a half is a long time to watch a clock. The runner can share a link to their own Livebib broadcast. Family and friends open it in a browser, no account and no app, and see the position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. When the phone loses signal on the mountain in the night, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing, and it is never shown as measured. The runner decides who gets the link.
