The island where swimrun began

ÖTILLÖ Swimrun Utö opens the Swedish swimrun season on Saturday 12 June 2027, with three courses that start and finish at Utö Värdshus in the Stockholm archipelago.

ÖTILLÖ calls Utö the place where the swimrun movement started, and the race on the island marks the start of the Swedish swimrun season. In swimrun you run and swim in turns without a transition area, so shoes stay on in the water and the wetsuit stays on while you run. Teams and solo racers both line up, and all three courses start and finish at Utö Värdshus.

The World Series course covers 32.1 km, with 4.51 km of swimming and 27.59 km of running split over 17 swims and 18 runs, and about 261 m of climbing. It starts at 11:00. The Sprint is 18.18 km with 2.19 km in the water and starts at 12:15. The Experience is 7.04 km with 1.09 km of swimming and starts at 12:20, and in ÖTILLÖ's words gives a real taste of swimrun in the Stockholm archipelago.

The trails are technical and change character across the island: pine forest, rocky granite cliffs in the north and sandy beaches in the south. The swims are protected open water, and the sea views make up for the short climbs. The World Series has cut-offs at Utö Harbour and Utö North, and the Sprint one at Utö Harbour. ÖTILLÖ describes the World Series as lots of varied runs in all sorts of terrain and many short, intense swims, and the Experience as a race for those completely new to the sport.

Spectators get a good view at Utö Gruvbryggan, which all three courses pass, and around the start and finish at Utö Värdshus. The races are also easy to follow by bike, and bikes can be hired at Utö Harbour. Utö is reached by ferry from Årsta Brygga to Gruvbryggan, so check the timetable before you set out and plan the return trip as well.
