Misti Ultra Summit, live.

Up the volcano, or along the Chilina valley

A trail race on the Misti volcano in Arequipa, with two high mountain distances on the volcano itself and three shorter ones in the Valle de Chilina. The 2026 edition was held on Saturday 12 September. The organiser has not yet published the date of the next one.

The 50K, which the organiser calls the queen distance, is a skyrunning route toward the summit of the Misti: 51.7 km with 2,471 m of climbing and 3,900 m of descent on technical trails, volcanic sand and steep slopes. The 35K, Camino a la Cumbre, covers 36.59 km with 2,090 m up and 3,485 m down. Both list the summit, at 5,825 m, as their high point and about 2,400 m as their low point, so each loses far more height than it gains. The organiser rates both very hard, asks for a headlamp with spare batteries, a thermal blanket, a whistle, warm layers and a charged phone, and warns that liquids can freeze on the climb.

The three shorter distances stay in the Valle de Chilina. The 20K, Media Montaña, runs 20.3 km with 450 m of climbing on volcanic trails between 2,380 m and 2,800 m. The 10K, Desafío Progresivo, measures 11.1 km with about 220 m up, and the 6K, the organiser's introduction to trail running, measures 6.8 km with 180 m, both on dirt paths and country roads. Sun protection is on every kit list, since the organiser stresses the strong radiation in Arequipa. The organiser did not publish start times for the 2026 edition.

High on a volcano, a phone can lose its signal for long stretches. On Livebib the runner shares a link with whoever they choose. Family and friends open it in a browser, no app or account needed, and see the position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. When the signal drops, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing, so nobody mistakes a quiet phone for a runner standing still.
