Course & challenge

Inca Trail Marathon

Runners spend the night before in a camp near the start, surrounded by glaciated peaks, and set off before dawn with headlamps. The course crosses two high mountain passes between Salkantay and Humantay, with a high point above 15,200 feet, about 4,630 m, passes glacial lakes and a 20,000-foot snow peak, and drops at the end into the high Amazon rainforest. The organiser measures it professionally to 26.2 miles.

There is one enforced cutoff, at mile 16 at 14:00, eight hours and ten minutes after the start, with no exceptions. At least three aid stations serve water and snacks, but they can be a couple of hours apart, so every runner carries fluids, food and emergency gear in a day pack. The trail is mostly dirt and uneven rock, with steep, narrow passages, and it stays open to hikers and porters. The course best times since the move to the Salkantay trail are 6:25:11 for men, set in 2024, and 6:48:22 for women, set in 2023.

This page covers the Inca Trail Marathon 2027. On Livebib, family and friends see the runner’s position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate for Lucmabamba that updates as the race goes. In the high passes, where the phone can lose its signal, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated.
