Mountain road running in the Peneda-Gerês National Park

The Gerês Extreme Marathon is a weekend of mountain road races based in Vila do Gerês, inside Portugal's only national park.

The event runs from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November 2026 and is organised by Carlos Sá Nature Events with the support of the Terras de Bouro municipality. On Saturday 28 November the Extreme 90k leaves Vila do Gerês in three waves at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00, and the Race 12 km starts at 11:30 from the Museu da Geira. On Sunday 29 November the marathon of about 42 km and the 14 km start at 9:00, followed shortly after by the half marathon of about 21 km.

The organisers are clear that this is not a trail race. The courses use asphalt, paved roads and dirt tracks, but they climb and drop like mountain routes, and the regulation warns of sudden weather changes that can bring heat, cold, strong wind, dense fog, heavy rain or even snow. The roads stay open with controlled traffic, one of them crosses the border, and headphones are not allowed.

The marathon has a 7 hour limit and a cut-off at the Museu da Geira, 29 km into the race, after 5 hours 15 minutes. Its aid stations are at 7, 17, 24, 29 and 34 km. There are no plastic cups or bottles, so every participant carries their own cup. Fields are limited, with 300 places on the 90k and 700 on the marathon. Runners aged 18 may enter the 12 km, 14 km and 21 km, while the longer races are for those over 20.
