From Everest Base Camp down to Namche Bazaar

Every 29 May, the day Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary reached the summit in 1953, the Everest Marathon sends its field down the Khumbu valley from Everest Base Camp.

The 2027 race is the 22nd edition of the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon and marks the 74th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest. Race day is 29 May 2027, and every course finishes in Namche Bazaar.

The full marathon covers 42.195 km from Everest Base Camp at 5,356 m, at the foot of the Khumbu Icefall. It runs via Gorakshep and Dingboche, with a loop at Bibre, and then down via Kyanjuma to Namche Bazaar. Participants must reach Thayngboche by 4 pm. The half marathon is 21 km from Dingboche to Namche Bazaar.

The UTME is the 70 km Extreme Ultra. It also starts at Base Camp, heads from Dingboche toward Bibre and Chhukung, and from Phortse toward the Nha La, crossing five high Himalayan passes before descending via Mongla to Namche Bazaar. There are cut-offs at Pangboche at 11:30 and at Machhermo at 17:00, and finishers must arrive before 23:59 on 29 May. Entry asks for at least one finished 100 km race, and high altitude experience is preferred.

The organiser's packages include two nights at Base Camp, where otherwise only expedition climbers camp, and a climb of Kala Patthar at 5,545 m before the race. For the marathon the organiser asks for physical fitness and prefers running experience. The course is mostly downhill on trekking trails, so the organiser says caution while running is a must.
