The oldest marathon in the Netherlands, through Enschede and the Twente campus

The Enschede Marathon, first run in July 1947 with 51 runners, is the oldest marathon in the Netherlands and returns on Sunday 11 April 2027.

The organiser also calls it the oldest marathon in Western Europe. Today nearly 17,000 runners enter one of its distances each year, and about 80,000 supporters line the route and the city centre.

There are four races. The Elektramat Marathon covers 42.195 km and the Forvis Mazars Halve Marathon 21.1 km. The Rosen CityRUN over 10 km finishes on the Van Heekplein in the city centre, and the Univé FitRUN covers 5 km. The courses are known as fast, passing the campus of the University of Twente, the F35 cycle route and the Van Heekpark.

The organiser says the fast course and good facilities make for fast finish times, which with the April date makes the marathon a good choice for a personal best or a first marathon in spring. The shorter races let families and colleagues join the same day. Through the EUREGIO combination, people can also link the race with the Münster Marathon in September.

The organiser promises supporters along the way, on the Oude Markt and at the finish line, and places Enschede fourth among Dutch marathons after Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Eindhoven.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Enschede Marathon.
