The Muang Thai Chiang Mai Marathon starts at Tha Phae Gate on Sunday 20 December 2026, in the year the city marks its 730th anniversary.

The 2026 Muang Thai Chiang Mai Marathon is on Sunday 20 December 2026, with every start at Tha Phae Gate on the eastern side of Chiang Mai's old city. The organiser ties this edition to the 730th anniversary of Chiang Mai City, the old capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Race packs are collected at an expo at Tha Phae Gate on 18 and 19 December.

There are four distances and the starts are early. The marathon goes at 3 AM with a 10 AM cut off, and the half marathon at 4 AM with a 7.30 AM cut off. Both finish at the King Naresuan the Great Monument in Mae Rim District, north of the city, and a free shuttle brings people back to Tha Phae Gate between 6.30 and 10.30 AM. The 10K starts at 5 AM and the 3K Smile Run at 5.20 AM, and both start and finish at Tha Phae Gate.

The organiser describes the route as flat with no hills and gives a race day temperature of 12 to 18 degrees, which makes it a fair place to aim for a time in the cool hours before dawn. The 3K has categories for kids aged 12 and under and for fancy dress, so it suits families as well.

Spectators can see every start at Tha Phae Gate, and the 10K and 3K come back to the same place. The award ceremony for the 10K and 3K is at Tha Phae Gate, while the marathon and half marathon awards are held at the Mae Rim finish. People came from 65 countries and territories for this edition, so expect an international field.
