Across the Cordillera Blanca to Chavín de Huántar

Three trail races in Áncash that all finish at the archaeological site of Chavín de Huántar, which the organiser says the Chavín culture built more than 2,200 years ago. The 8th edition was run on Sunday 3 May 2026. The organiser, Sierra Andina Outdoors, has not yet published the date of the next one.

The 45K Sky Marathon starts in Olleros at 06:00 and crosses the Andes from west to east on a route the organiser says is usually walked in three days with llamas, inside the Parque Nacional Huascarán. It passes Hacienda Breque at km 13 and Pampacancha at km 19, then climbs to the Abra Yanashallash at 4,700 m, km 26, with a cut-off at 7 hours. Chichucancha follows at km 36 (cut-off 8 hours) and Nunupata at km 40, before the finish at the monument. In all it covers 43.7 km with 1,620 m up and 1,890 m down, in 10 hours at most.

The other two start and finish at the monument itself. The 22K Sky Race leaves at 09:30 for 21.4 km and 1,240 m of climbing, through pine forest and the villages around Chavín, across rivers and past the site's viewpoint, with a chance of seeing the Andean condor. It has a cut-off at Chichucancha after 5 hours and 7 hours in all. The 13K starts at 10:00, climbs 820 m in 12.6 km by way of Nunupata, and has six and a half hours to finish, with views of Nevado Huantsán, 6,369 m, the third highest peak of the Cordillera Blanca according to the organiser.

On a course that crosses a pass at 4,700 m, a phone can go a long time without signal. On Livebib the runner shares a link with whoever they choose. When the signal drops, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing.
