Course & challenge

A sea loch, two hundred kilometres and two Munros

The Scottish entry on the XTRI World Tour swims in a jellyfish-filled sea loch and finishes over a mountain ridge.

CELTMAN! runs in Torridon, in Wester Ross, and it is the least forgiving-looking place a triathlon has ever been staged. The swim is 3.4 kilometres in Loch Shieldaig — shortened from the full distance because of the temperature, and famous for the lion’s mane jellyfish. The bike is 202 kilometres of single-track passes and open Atlantic coast road. The run is 42 kilometres with more than 1,600 metres of climbing, and the athletes who reach the high-course cut-off in time are sent over two Munros on the Beinn Eighe ridge rather than around them.

Every athlete runs with their own support crew, and the mountain section is done in pairs for safety, which makes this a race followed rather than watched. On Livebib the swim, the bike and the run sit on one map with the athlete moving along them, the transitions marked, and an arrival estimate for the next point that updates all day — the number a crew waiting at a Highland layby actually needs.
