Africa's first Major, from Green Point to Vlei Road
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon enters the Abbott World Marathon Majors at its 2027 edition, the first Major ever held on African soil.
The 2027 Sanlam Cape Town Marathon runs over the weekend of 22 and 23 May, with the marathon on Sunday 23 May. It is the race's first edition as a member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, confirmed in June 2026, joining Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York as the eighth Major. The organiser keeps two thirds of its entries for African participants. In 2026 Mohamed Esa of Ethiopia won in 2:04:55, making it the fastest marathon in Africa.
Two starts feed the marathon. The Stadium start is on Fritz Sonnenberg Road next to Cape Town Stadium in Green Point, and the Beach Road start is in Mouille Point, with runners released in alternating waves. Every event finishes on Vlei Road. The route is fast and flat, through the city past Stanhope Road and the Company Gardens. There are 15 hydration stations about 3 km apart, and the cut-off is 6.5 hours, counted from the last runner over the start mat.
Saturday 22 May belongs to the other races. The 10 km and 5 km Peace Runs start in the Stadium precinct and are meant for families and friends to run together, and prams are allowed. The trail events climb into Table Mountain National Park: the 22 km Stately Trail with about 830 m of ascent, the 11 km Pincushion Trail with about 390 m, and a 43 km trail marathon with a 10 hour cut-off.
Marathon places for 2027 went through a ballot that closed on 24 June 2026, and start times are published closer to race day. In 2026 the race had some 8,500 international entries, and the streets were lined with spectators.
On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, so the dot on the map is only as good as that phone and its signal. The official results and splits come from the organiser of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.
