Paddle, climb a mountain, ride back
Scandinavia’s oldest multisport race starts on a beach in Åre and goes over the top of the mountain above it.
Åre Extreme Challenge has been run since 1997 and still does the same three things: a paddle leg on the water below the village, a mountain run up and over Åreskutan at around 1,400 metres, and a mountain bike leg on rocky singletrack back down into Åre torg. In 2026 the organiser added the Lake category, with its own paddle section, and measured it at 15 kilometres of paddling, 14.6 of running and 33.6 on the bike for 1,838 metres of climb.
It is a race defined by its transitions — the beach at Åre and the square in the middle of the village — which is exactly where the crowd stands and exactly where a supporter needs to know the athlete is about to appear. On Livebib all three legs sit on one map with the athlete moving along them, the transitions marked, and an arrival estimate for the next one that keeps updating. One link, free to watch.
