Over the high passes to Ollantaytambo

Four point-to-point trail races in the Sacred Valley of Cusco, each starting in a different place and all finishing in Ollantaytambo. The 2026 edition was run on 14 and 15 August. The organiser, Grupo Andes Race, has not yet published the date of the next one.

The 100K starts in Huarán on Friday afternoon, at 15:00 in 2026, and runs 101 km with 6,190 m of climbing and 6,270 m of descent, between 2,847 m and 4,700 m. The organiser calls it one of the hardest trail running routes in South America, and perhaps the world. Its time barriers trace the way: Quishuarani at km 22, Lares at km 40, Chupani at km 58, Huacahuasi at km 71, Patacancha at km 85 and Pumamarca at km 96, with 26 hours to reach Ollantaytambo. Six aid stations and drop bags at Lares and Huacahuasi carry runners through the night.

The 60K starts at 01:00 on Saturday from the Pachakuti Ecolodge in Lares: 62 km, 3,600 m up and 3,930 m down, with barriers at Chupani (km 19), Huacahuasi (km 32), Patacancha (km 47) and Pumamarca (km 57), and 16 hours in all. The 30K leaves Huacahuasi at 09:00, climbs about 700 m to the Abra Ipsaijasa at 4,500 m, descends toward Willoq and makes a last climb to the archaeological site of Pumamarca before dropping to Ollantaytambo, 31 km with 2,020 m of descent. The 13K starts in Willoq at 09:00 and drops 1,110 m past Inca terraces to the Plaza de Ollantaytambo, with three hours to finish.

The two long races cross passes above 4,000 m in the dark, where a phone can go a long time without signal. On Livebib the runner shares a link with whoever they choose. Family and friends open it in a browser, no app or account needed, and see the position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate for Ollantaytambo that updates as the race goes. When the signal drops, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing.
