From the Olympic Stadium along the Amstel

The TCS Amsterdam Marathon is an October road race weekend that starts and finishes in the 1928 Olympic Stadium.

The 2027 edition is on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October. The race began in 1975 with about 300 participants, and the 2025 edition drew 60,000 runners from 140 countries, the year the organisers marked 50 years with an anniversary book. It holds a World Athletics Platinum Label, and at the 2026 edition Buze Diriba set a women's course record of 2:16:12 while Lemi Berhanu won the men's race in 2:03:33.

The marathon is 42.195 km and starts and finishes at the Olympic Stadium, with runners finishing in front of the grandstand. The course follows the Amstel river past stately mansions and windmills, partly on the route of the 1928 Olympic Games, and comes close to the inner city. In the 2026 programme the marathon started at 09:00 with a time limit of 6 hours.

The Mizuno Half Marathon of 21.1 km starts on the Stadionweg, crosses the Amstel on the Utrechtse Brug and runs through Watergraafsmeer and Zeeburg before joining the marathon route through the city centre to the stadium. On Saturday the Samsung Galaxy 7.5K runs through Amsterdam South and past the Vondelpark, a good choice for a first race. There are also kids runs and mini marathons.

The organisers say there are plenty of good spots along the course to cheer, and in the Olympic Stadium you can take a seat in the covered stands to watch the start of the marathon and the finish of every distance. To see a runner at more than one place, they suggest getting around by bike or metro.
