The whole Karkonosze ridge in winter

The Zimowy Ultramaraton Karkonoski is a winter mountain ultra of about 47.5 km along the main ridge of the Karkonosze in south west Poland.

The 13th Zimowy Ultramaraton Karkonoski im. Tomka Kowalskiego is on Saturday 27 February 2027. It is run in memory of Tomek Kowalski, an ultrarunner and mountaineer. About 400 people take part, and places are drawn by lot after a short registration window in autumn.

The start is at 7:30 in Szklarska Poręba, at the upper car park below Kamieńczyk, and buses take participants there from Karpacz from 5:30 after a check of mandatory kit. The course climbs to Szrenica, runs past Śnieżne Kotły and Przełęcz Karkonoska, goes over the summit of Śnieżka and continues to Przełęcz Okraj before dropping to the finish on the Deptak in Karpacz.

Aid points stand at the hut on Hala Szrenicka, at Odrodzenie, at Dom Śląski with a hot meal and at Przełęcz Okraj. The overall time limit is 10.5 hours and the finish closes at 18:00. The organiser accepts only people with experience of long mountain races and of moving in the mountains in winter, because snow, wind and fog can make the ridge very hard.

The race office and the finish are in Karpacz, so that is where friends and families wait. The evening prize giving is held at Chata Karkonoska.
