York's marathon through the Vale of York

The Yorkshire Marathon starts and finishes at the University of York and loops out through the countryside east of the city.

The Altra Yorkshire Marathon is on Sunday 17 October 2027, organised by Run For All. The marathon starts at 09:30 at the University of York, and the Yorkshire 10 Mile follows at 10:15 from the same campus. In 2026 more than 15,000 people signed up across the festival, the biggest entry in its history.

The marathon leaves the campus, runs outside York's city walls and heads into the countryside through Stockton-on-the-Forest and Buttercrambe Moor Wood. It circles round by Balloon Tree Farm and loops back towards the city for the finish on the university campus. The 10 Mile passes York Minster, goes through Stockton-on-the-Forest and returns along Murton Way to University Road.

Both races are on roads and suit a wide range of abilities, from first marathons to people chasing a personal best. Pacers run with finish-time flags, and entrants must be 18 or older on the day. Wheelchair athletes and relay teams also take part in the festival.

The event village is on Campus West, with food, drink and the partner charities, and the bag store is on Campus South. The organiser credits the support of York's famously enthusiastic crowds for the atmosphere. On marathon day, dedicated park and ride services and city centre buses bring runners to the start and finish at the university.
