Orchards, tea fields and Hmong villages around Moc Chau

The ninth Vietnam Trail Marathon takes runners through the orchards and tea plantations of Moc Chau on Saturday 16 January 2027.

The Vietnam Trail Marathon, VTM for short, holds its ninth edition on Saturday 16 January 2027 in Moc Chau, near Hanoi, an area known for blossom filled orchards and tea plantations. It is part of the Vietnam Trail Series, organised by Topas Travel, which began ultra racing in Vietnam with the Vietnam Mountain Marathon in 2013. Every distance finishes at the heart shaped tea hill, Doi Che Trai Tim.

The 70 km ultra trail measures 67.2 km with 2,800 m of climbing and starts at 5:00 from the Muong Thanh Moc Chau Hotel, with cut offs at its checkpoints and a final cut off at 23:30. New for 2027 is the 50 km, which measures 50.2 km with 2,000 m of climbing and starts at 7:00 from the same hotel. The 21 km trail run is 21.6 km with 1,000 m of climbing and starts at 8:00. The 10 km trail run is 11.1 km with 320 m of climbing and starts at 9:00 from the sports ground of Phieng Canh village, and the 5 km starts at 9:00 in the Na Ka plum valley.

The two ultras need a qualifying result: a timed mountain race of 40 km or more for the 70 km and a trail race of 20 km or more for the 50 km. The 70 km, 50 km and 21 km are for people aged 18 and over, the 10 km from 16, and the 5 km from 6, with entrants under 16 running alongside a guardian. Buses take 5 km and 10 km runners from behind the Muong Thanh hotel to their starts.

The routes cross orchards, jungle, tea fields and remote villages, with singletrack and some short technical sections, and runners share the trails with local farmers and their animals. Supporters should head for the finish at the heart shaped tea hill, where there is food, music and the age group trophy booth on Saturday.
