The night relay comes to Hornslandet

10MILA is the orienteering relay that runs through a whole night, and on 1 and 2 May 2027 the 80th edition is held at Horns gård just southeast of central Västervik.

The first 10MILA was run in 1945 with 66 teams, and it is described by its organisers as the first multi-runner race in orienteering history. In 2027 the anniversary edition also marks 50 years of the women's relay, which began in 1977 as 2-mila with five legs and 296 teams. The arena sits on the estate of Horns gård on the Hornslandet peninsula, with the forest right beside the start and finish and short walks between everything.

Three relays share the weekend. The youth relay starts at 14:30 on Saturday with four legs of 3.8, 3.8, 2.6 and 4.2 km for runners up to W16 and M16. The men's relay starts at 17:30 and covers ten legs and 100 km in total, with legs from 7.0 to 14.5 km. Five legs are run at night and the ninth at dawn. The women's relay starts at 21:10 and has grown to seven legs and 50.6 km, with three night legs before a chasing start at 05:45 on Sunday. All course lengths and times are provisional and may still be adjusted.

The terrain is open forest with good runnability and demanding navigation. The men's and women's relays use a 1:10,000 map with 5 metre contours, and the youth relay a 1:7,500 map. The sun sets at 20:39 on Saturday and rises at 04:58 on Sunday, so the night legs are properly dark. This is a club relay entered through Eventor, which suits orienteers who run for a club, from young juniors to world class seniors.

The organisers expect almost 10,000 runners, the world elite among them, and the changeovers in the arena are where the atmosphere lives. Spectators can follow the teams leg by leg through the evening and back again at dawn, when the last legs decide the race.
