Up Yr Wyddfa and back from Llanberis

Ras yr Wyddfa, the International Snowdon Race, runs from Llanberis to the summit of Yr Wyddfa and back down the same path.

The 50th Ras yr Wyddfa, the Snowdon Race, is on 17 July 2027, and entries open on 1 March 2027. The first race was held on 19 July 1976, after Ken Jones of Llanberis put the idea to the village carnival committee. Eighty-six runners took part, and Dave Francis of Bristol won in 1 hour 12 minutes 5 seconds.

The 10 mile course leaves the main road in Llanberis, follows the A4086 towards Capel Curig and turns up by the Royal Victoria Hotel, climbs a steep tarmac lane and joins the well defined path up the mountain. It passes under the Half Way and Clogwyn bridges to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales and England, and returns the same way to the finish in Llanberis.

Runners must stay on the left both up and down, and those climbing must give way to those descending. Care is needed near the railway line, and every runner must pass the timing mat at the summit. Runners from more than ten countries take part, and the organiser counts it among the greatest races in the world of mountain running.

Since 1980 the race has been twinned with the Trofeo Vanoni mountain race in Morbegno, Italy, and it was first shown on S4C in 1987. The race starts and finishes on a field in Llanberis, and it has always been organised by the local community and a committee of volunteers.
