Duisburg's flat road marathon from the Sportpark to the arena

The 44th schauinsland-reisen Rhein-Ruhr-Marathon starts and finishes in the Sportpark Duisburg on Sunday 2 May 2027, with a marathon, a half marathon and a four person half marathon relay.

The marathon starts at 08:30 and the half marathon and relay at 10:00. Finishers run into the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena, and the course closes after 5 hours 30 minutes for the marathon and 3 hours 15 minutes for the half. Parking, changing rooms, start and finish all sit close together, which the organiser calls the marathon of short distances.

The course is flat, fully asphalted, closed to traffic and measured by a licensed WA-AIMS and DLV measurer, so times count for ranking lists. On the most recent course the route passes the Theater Duisburg, the Innenhafen at kilometre 5, the inland port with its peninsulas, Ruhrort, and crosses the Rhine on the Friedrich-Ebert-Brücke and the Brücke der Solidarität before the lakes of the Sechs-Seen-Platte near the end. The organiser says the 2027 course may change, with details to follow.

In the relay four runners share 21.1 km, with changeovers in the city centre at the Steinsche Gasse around kilometre 5, in Wanheimerort around kilometre 10 and in Großenbaum around kilometre 16, and shuttle buses from the arena to the changeover points. The marathon has 18 aid stations and the half 10. Every finisher gets a medal and an adidas finisher shirt, and the race number is a free public transport ticket across the VRR network on race day.

Spectators can expect samba bands along the route, 18 of them according to the organiser, and cheering zones in the last kilometres. The arena finish is the place to see people come home.
