Gravel roads under the towers of Paine

The Patagonian International Marathon runs five distances over two days on the roads southwest of Torres del Paine National Park.

The fifteenth Patagonian International Marathon takes place on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 September 2027 in the commune of Torres del Paine, in Chilean Patagonia. The first edition in 2012 was the first marathon held in Torres del Paine National Park, and the event has been run every September since, with a break only in 2020. Runners from more than 65 countries have taken part.

The 42K, 21K and 10K are run on Saturday and the 30K and 15K on Sunday. Each distance has its own start along routes Y-290 and Y-200, from Lago Maravilla for the 42K to Cuernos del Paine for the 10K, and all finish at Hotel del Paine in the Serrano sector. The courses use the park area's gravel roads with curves and steep slopes. The 42K measures 42.01 km with 687 m of ascent and is about three quarters gravel, while the 10K measures 10.34 km with 167 m of ascent.

The base town is Puerto Natales, about 100 km south of the race area. Kits are collected there on 2 and 3 September, and official buses leave the Plaza de Armas early on race morning for the start lines. The region keeps UTC minus 3 all year, and the organiser warns that the climate can be relentless and at times even hostile, so come prepared.

This is a race for people who want landscape more than a fast time, and the shorter distances make it possible to come with friends of different levels. The time limit runs from 2 hours for the 10K to 7 hours for the 42K, and the awards ceremony for every distance is held at the finish line at Hotel del Paine.
