Course & challenge

Farnham to Knockholt Pound on the national trail

The North Downs Way 50 is a point to point trail race along the North Downs Way National Trail from Farnham in Surrey to Knockholt Pound on the edge of Greater London.

The 16th edition starts at 07:45 on Saturday 15 May 2027. Race HQ is Farnham Leisure Centre, and after the briefing participants walk about 5 minutes to the start at the trail head. The finish is in the fields behind Knockholt Pound Village Hall. The cut-off is 13 hours and about 300 people start.

The 50 miles (81 km) carry 5,600 ft (about 1,700 m) of climb on a route that is around 80% trail. It passes Puttenham and Guildford, crosses Ranmore Common and makes the steepest climb of the race to the top of Box Hill, then climbs Colley Hill and runs on through Merstham to Oxted and the last 8 miles to Knockholt Pound. The course is the first 50 miles of the NDW100 and leaves the national trail only for the final half mile.

Six aid stations are stocked along the way, and pacers and crews are not permitted. Exposed chalk can be slippery in the wet, and several busy road crossings are not marshalled. The NDW50 is the second race in Centurion's 50 mile Grand Slam, and entrants need a marathon finished within its cut-off since 1 January 2021.

Spectators can cheer anywhere along the route except at or near the checkpoints. Those collecting runners park at Coolings Lifestyle Garden Centre, a 5 minute walk from the finish field.

If a participant chooses to share the position of the phone they carry, you can follow them live on Livebib. The dot on the map comes from their own phone, not from the organiser's timing, and the official results are the organiser's.
