220 km of classic track through Lapland

Nordenskiöldsloppet is a 220 km classic ski race from Jokkmokk to Njavve and back, held on Saturday 20 March 2027.

The race goes back to 1884. During his Greenland expedition of 1883, the polar explorer Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld sent two skiers into the inland ice. They came back after about 57 hours and said they had covered some 460 km, and many people doubted it. To test the claim, Nordenskiöld organised a race from Jokkmokk to Kvikkjokk and back, 220 km, which started on 3 April 1884 with 18 men on the line. The winner, Pavva Lars Nilsson Tuorda, needed 21 hours and 22 minutes. The modern race has been held since 2016, and 2027 is its 10th edition in modern times.

The start is at 05:00 on Saturday 20 March 2027 by Jokkmokk Ski Stadium, and the start area opens at 04:00. The course leads through untouched wilderness north of the Arctic Circle, across reindeer winter pasture and further up toward the mountains, to the turn at Njavve around 108 to 111 km. From there it comes back to the finish in Jokkmokk. Checkpoints include Brändön at 15 km and again at 206 km, Purkijaur at 201 km, Tjåmotis, Granudden and Bälkasgårro, plus an extra night checkpoint between Brändön and the finish.

The race is classic technique only, and skating can lead to disqualification. Fluorinated wax and top coats are banned. There are four starting pens: elite, a competition class for those skiing under 17 hours, a competition class for those skiing over 17 hours, and the recreational class. This is a full day and often an evening on skis in cold, remote country, so it suits experienced long distance skiers who have built up many hours on snow. Bibs are collected in Jokkmokk on 18 and 19 March.

Both the early morning start and the finish are in Jokkmokk. Along the way a snowmobile service track runs a short distance from the course, with a service point roughly every five kilometres where helpers can reach their skier, and the checkpoints that can be reached by car are Brändön at 15 and 206 km, the Njavve turn at 108 and 111 km and Purkijaur at 201 km. The course runs through a Sami reindeer husbandry area, and Nordenskiöldsloppet promotes sustainable reindeer husbandry in connection with the event.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry during the race. This is a separate service and not the organiser's timing. Official times, checkpoint passages and results come from Nordenskiöldsloppet.
