Up the Niesen funicular's service stair to 2,362 m

The Niesen-Treppenlauf climbs 11,674 steps beside the Niesenbahn from Mülenen to the summit, with the relay on Friday 11 June and the solo race on Saturday 12 June 2027.

The organiser calls the Niesen stair the longest stair in the world. It runs beside the funicular from the valley station in Mülenen at 693 m to the summit platform at 2,362 m, a height difference of 1,669 m. The lower section is a 2.1 km stair with 976 m of climbing that must be done within 70 minutes. At the Schwandegg middle station there is a refreshment point and the route changes track. The upper section is 1.3 km with almost 700 m of climbing, and anyone who passes the end of the Hegeren tunnel too late is taken out of the race. The last metres follow the paved panorama path to the finish.

The relay is on Friday afternoon, 11 June 2027. Pairs start from Mülenen from 16:00, two starters every 20 seconds, and hand over at Schwandegg. The solo race is on Saturday morning, 12 June 2027, with starts between 07:30 and 08:00 and the finish closing at 10:20. Registration opens on 13 January, 150 days before the solo race. In 2026 Jonathan Schmid set a new stair record of 55 minutes and 26 seconds.

The stair is a service and rescue stair, and walking it without permission is forbidden at any time, so race day is the one chance to climb it. Entries include the ride down on the Niesenbahn, bag transport, a finisher shirt and food at the start, on the course and at the finish.
