Tromsø on its feet in the light of June
The Midnight Sun Marathon is Tromsø's summer road race, held every June since the first edition in 1990.
The 2027 edition is on 19 June. The race is organised by the Midnight Sun Marathon foundation, which was set up in 1989, and the first race followed in 1990. In 2026 about 9,000 people from 97 nations took part, a record for the event.
The organiser offers five distances in total. The main ones are the marathon, the Mizuno Half Marathon and the Coop Mila over 10 km, alongside the iTromsø Minimaraton and the 870 m Redd Barna Løpet. Check the organiser's programme for 2027 start times before you plan the day.
The courses run on roads through Tromsø, and course maps with elevation profiles are published for the marathon and the half. The name says what makes it different: in June the sun does not set this far north, and race day falls in the weeks of light around midsummer.
The organiser calls it one of the world's northernmost marathons, a running experience out of the ordinary. The published course maps are from 2026, and the organiser notes that small changes may come for 2027.
On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Midnight Sun Marathon.
